Hard Water Spots: Why San Diego Cars Get Them and How to Stop
San Diego draws much of its water from sources that arrive mineral-rich, and it shows up on cars. Water spots here are not an occasional annoyance — they are the default outcome of letting water dry on paint.
The good news is that most water spotting is preventable with a change in habit rather than a product. The bad news is that the stage most people ignore it until is the stage that requires machine polishing.
The three stages, and why they matter
Water spots are not one problem. They are one problem caught at three different points, and the treatment is completely different at each.
Stage one — mineral deposits sitting on the surface. Water evaporated, the dissolved calcium and magnesium stayed behind. The paint underneath is untouched. These wipe off with a detail spray or come off in the next proper wash.
Stage two — bonded deposits. The minerals have been baked on by sun and heat and now resist normal washing. The paint underneath is usually still fine. These need a dedicated water spot remover or a mild acidic cleaner, and often clay bar decontamination.
Stage three — etching. The minerals, concentrated by evaporation and heated by the sun, have chemically eaten a shallow crater into the clear coat. There is nothing sitting on the surface anymore — the surface itself is deformed. No cleaner fixes this. It requires machine polishing to level the clear coat down to the base of the etch.
Quick clue, not a definitive test: wet the panel. Spots that vanish while wet and return as it dries are more likely deposits; spots still clearly visible on wet paint point toward etching. Water fills and optically hides shallow defects too, so this narrows the answer rather than settling it — a proper inspection under good light is what confirms it.
Stage one becomes stage three faster than people expect — a hot afternoon on a dark panel can do it in a single day.
The four common causes here
Sprinklers. By a wide margin the worst offender, and the most common. Irrigation water is mineral-heavy — whether it is potable supply or recycled water, treatment addresses safety, not hardness — and it runs on a timer at dawn, so the water sits on the car and then the sun comes up. A car parked in the same spot next to the same sprinkler head develops spotting in a consistent pattern on one side. Washing in direct sun. Water evaporates from the panel faster than you can dry it, so it dries in place. This is why washing in shade or early morning is not a fussy detail — it is the difference between a clean car and a spotted one.
Rinsing without drying. Leaving a car to air dry is leaving minerals to deposit. This is a genuine trade-off rather than a rule: if you are near the coast, rinsing salt off frequently is worth doing and matters more than the spotting. The answer is not to rinse less — it is to remove the water afterwards with a blower, or with spot-free water, rather than towelling paint that has only been rinsed and still has grit on it.
Marine layer and morning dew combined with coastal salt, especially near the water. Dew is relatively clean, but it picks up whatever is already on the paint and concentrates it as it evaporates.
Preventing them
Dry the car. Every time. This is the whole answer, most of the time. A clean microfiber drying towel or a filtered blower, and do not let it air dry. Even a quick rinse gets dried.
Wash in shade, or early. Morning, evening, or a covered spot. If the panel is hot to the touch, it is too hot to wash properly.
Move the car away from sprinkler range, or adjust the heads. This one fix solves the majority of recurring spotting cases we see.
Keep a protective layer on the paint. A sealant or ceramic wax does not stop minerals from landing, but it stops them from bonding as tightly, so they release during a normal wash instead of baking on. This is one of the genuinely practical benefits of protection here.
Keep a detail spray and a towel in the car. Catching a fresh sprinkler hit at stage one takes two minutes. At stage three it takes a polisher.
What not to do
Do not scrub dried spots off dry paint. You are dragging hardened mineral across clear coat. That trades water spots for scratches.
Do not use household descalers or vinegar at full strength. Acidic cleaners formulated for automotive paint exist and are diluted for a reason. Kitchen products can strip protection and damage trim, glass coatings, and anodized finishes.
Do not assume polishing is always the answer. Polishing removes clear coat, and clear coat is finite. Confirm the spots are actually etched — using the wet test above — before reaching for an abrasive.
When it is already etched
