What We Need From Your Driveway: Preparing for a Mobile Detail

ES Luxury Auto Detailing5 min read

The most common question before a first mobile appointment is some version of “will this actually work where I live?” Usually the answer is yes. Here is what genuinely matters and what does not.

What we bring

We arrive with water, power, and professional equipment. You do not need to supply a hose or an outdoor outlet.

Whether you need to be present for the whole appointment depends on the location and how we get access to the vehicle — mention it when you book and we will confirm what works for your situation.

That covers the two things people worry about most. What remains is space, shade, and access.

Space

We need room to work around the entire vehicle — enough clearance on all sides to open doors fully and reach the lower panels, plus space for equipment.

In practice that means a standard driveway, a parking space with an empty neighbor, or a quiet stretch of street parking. A tandem spot in a packed garage with cars on both sides does not work, because we cannot open doors fully or reach the lower panels.

If you are unsure, the test is whether you could comfortably walk a full circle around your car with your arms out.

Shade and temperature

This matters more than people expect. Working on hot paint in direct sun makes for worse results. Products flash off before they can be worked properly, water spots form while you are still rinsing, and polishing hot panels is harder to control.

Shade is not a hard requirement — we work around it. But a shaded driveway, a covered carport, or a morning appointment on an east-facing side of the building produces a better result than midday sun on a black car in July.

ℹ️

If your only option is full sun, book earlier in the day. Morning appointments on hot inland days in Escondido, Poway, or East County are meaningfully better than afternoon ones.

Water and runoff

We use a controlled amount of water, not a fire hose.

Runoff is not something to send down the street. In San Diego, wash water from a commercial service is not permitted to enter the gutter or a storm drain — storm drains discharge to creeks and the ocean without treatment. Managing that is our responsibility, not yours, and it is part of how we set up on site.

What is genuinely useful to tell us when booking: a garage floor with no drain, a shared surface where water would cross into a neighbor’s space, a slope that runs straight to the curb, or an HOA with rules about washing on common property. Most of these are workable with the right setup — tell us in advance and we will confirm what we can do at your location before the appointment, rather than discovering it on arrival.

Access situations worth flagging

Most complications are logistical, not technical, and all of them are solvable if we know in advance:

Gated communities — we need a gate code, a call-box name, or you notifying the guard. This is the single most common cause of a delayed start.

Apartment and condo garages — often workable, but low ceilings, tight spaces, and no drainage change the approach. Tell us the situation and we will tell you honestly whether it works or whether a nearby surface lot is better.

Street parking with permits or time limits — tell us the constraints. Whether it works depends on the location, the time window, and how runoff can be handled there, so we would rather confirm it with you than assume.

HOA restrictions — some communities restrict washing in driveways or on common areas. Worth checking before booking.

Multi-level garages with height limits — our vehicle needs clearance to reach the work area.

If your situation is not on this list and you are unsure, mention it when you book. We would much rather know beforehand than discover it on arrival.

What you should do beforehand

Very little, honestly:

  • Remove personal items from the interior — we clean around belongings rather than moving them, so a cleared cabin means a more thorough interior
  • Take out child seats if you want the seats underneath cleaned properly
  • Empty the trunk if the trunk is included in your service
  • Point out anything specific you want addressed — a stain, a scuff, a smell. We would rather hear it than guess.

You do not need to pre-rinse, pre-vacuum, or apologize for the state of the car. Genuinely — the car being dirty is the reason we are there.

Timing

Our packages run about 60 minutes for Bronze, three hours for Silver, and five hours for Gold. Those are working estimates for a standard vehicle in reasonable condition.

Realistic factors that extend them: heavy pet hair, significant interior staining, larger vehicles, and paint that needs more correction than expected. If we see something on arrival that will change the time or scope meaningfully, we tell you before starting rather than after.

Booking

You can book online and pick a time directly. Bookings are confirmed rather than instant — we review each one to make sure the time and location work for the service requested, which is also when we catch access issues before they become problems on the day.

If your situation is unusual, send us the details instead and we will tell you straight whether mobile service works for you.
