Sun Damage Inside the Car: What San Diego UV Does to Interiors
Coastal cars fight salt. Inland cars fight sun. If you park in Escondido, Poway, El Cajon, or anywhere the marine layer burns off by nine in the morning, ultraviolet exposure is the thing quietly aging your interior.
Unlike paint damage, interior UV damage is mostly permanent. A cracked dashboard cannot be polished out. So this is a case where prevention is not just cheaper than the cure — it is the only option.
What UV actually does
Sunlight breaks down the polymer chains in plastics, vinyl, and leather finishes. As those chains break, three things happen in sequence:
Plasticizers migrate out. The compounds that keep vinyl and plastic flexible slowly leave the material, and heat accelerates it. Some of what they leave behind is the hazy film that builds up on the inside of your windshield. (That film and “new car smell” come from a mix of sources — adhesives, foams, coatings and textiles all off-gas, not plasticizers alone.) As plasticizers leave, the material stiffens.
Color fades. UV bleaches pigment. Dark grey trim goes chalky. Black becomes a washed-out brown-grey.
The surface fails. Stiffened material stops flexing with daily heat cycling. It cracks. On leather, the finish coat cracks first, then the hide underneath dries and splits.
Interior surface temperatures on a closed car parked in direct sun routinely exceed the ambient air temperature by a very large margin. The dashboard, sitting directly under glass at the steepest angle to the sun, takes the worst of it.
Where it shows first
The dashboard top. Directly under the windshield, maximum exposure, and usually the first place cracking appears.
The rear parcel shelf. Same problem through the back window, on a surface most people never think about.
Door tops and armrests. High exposure plus constant contact with hands and forearms.
Leather seat bolsters. The driver’s side outer bolster gets sun through the window plus friction from getting in and out. It is almost always the first part of a leather interior to fail.
Steering wheel. Sun, skin oils, and constant handling. Fades and gets sticky.
The sticky, tacky dashboard some cars develop is not dirt — it is the clear coat or soft-touch coating breaking down. Cleaning does not fix it and aggressive cleaning accelerates it. Once it starts, the surface is failing.
What actually helps
A windshield sunshade. Unglamorous and by far the most effective thing you can do. It blocks direct radiation on the dashboard, the single most vulnerable surface. Reflective, fitted, used every time you park in sun.
Park in shade when there is a choice. Obvious, but worth stating: a covered spot on the far side of the lot beats a close spot in full sun, for the car if not for you.
UV protectant on interior surfaces. Dedicated interior protectants contain UV absorbers that take the damage instead of the material. This needs reapplication — it wears off — which is why it belongs in a maintenance rhythm rather than as a one-time treatment.
Condition leather, do not just clean it. Most modern automotive leather is coated rather than bare hide, so a conditioner is maintaining the polyurethane finish — keeping it supple and UV-protected — rather than feeding oils into the hide underneath. That is still worth doing, because it is the finish that cracks first. It also means a light, regular application beats an occasional heavy one, and that products promising deep nourishment are describing something coated leather cannot really do.
Window tint with genuine UV rejection on the side windows, where legal for your vehicle. This is where tint earns its money: laminated windshields already block the large majority of UV-A, while side and rear glass vary enormously between vehicles and are usually the weak point. A sunshade still matters regardless, because it blocks the visible light and infrared that drive dashboard surface temperature — which UV rejection alone does not.
What does not help
Greasy “shine” dressings. A high-gloss oily finish attracts dust and creates windshield glare, and the cheaper products in this category tend to lead with shine rather than UV absorbers. Some solvent-carried dressings can also dry the surface over time. Silicone itself is not the villain — plenty of good protectants are silicone-based — the tell is whether the product lists UV protection or just gloss, and whether it leaves a greasy film.
Cleaning more aggressively. Faded trim is not dirty. Scrubbing it removes what remains of the surface coating.
Waiting until you see damage. By the time cracking is visible, the material has already failed. Protection prevents; it does not reverse.
A realistic rhythm
For a car parked outside in inland San Diego:
- Every time you park in sun: windshield shade
- Every few months: interior clean plus UV protectant on dash, doors, and trim
- Every six months: leather cleaned and conditioned properly
- Annually: an honest look at the dash, parcel shelf, and driver’s bolster for early stiffening
